A logo has one job

A logo has one main job: to identify your business quickly and consistently, wherever people see it. It is not there to explain everything you do, show your products, or tell your whole story. That is what your brand, website, and content are for.

When business owners try to make a logo do too much, it usually ends up cluttered, hard to read at small sizes, and forgettable. The best logos in the world are often surprisingly simple, and that simplicity is exactly what makes them work.

What makes a logo good

It is simple. A good logo can be recognised in a fraction of a second. Fewer elements, clear shapes, and restrained detail make it easier to remember and easier to reproduce.

It is distinctive. It should not look like every other logo in your category. If your logo could belong to any of your competitors, it is not doing its job.

It works at every size. Your logo needs to work as a tiny WhatsApp profile picture, a website favicon, a social media avatar, and a large signboard. Test it small first, because that is where most logos fail.

It works in one colour. A strong logo still works in black, in white, and on a busy background. If it only works in full colour on white, it will struggle on packaging, embroidery, stamps, and signage.

It fits your brand. Every element, from the typeface to the colour, should match how you want to be seen. A playful café, a fintech company, and a law firm should not have logos that feel the same.

It lasts. Logos that chase trends date quickly. A good logo should still feel right in ten years.

The mistakes we see most often

Too much detail. Gradients, shadows, tiny text, and complicated illustrations look fine on a big screen and disappear everywhere else.

Trying to show everything. A real estate logo does not need a house, a key, and a skyline. A clinic logo does not need a stethoscope, a heart, and a cross.

Clip art and templates. Generic icons from logo generators make your business look like many others, and they can create trademark problems.

Hard-to-read typefaces. Decorative scripts and very thin fonts are often unreadable at small sizes.

No variations. Most businesses need a main logo, a compact or stacked version, and a simple icon or monogram for small spaces. Having only one version leads to stretched, squeezed, and cropped logos.

A logo is part of a brand system

A logo works best as part of a wider visual identity: colours, typography, imagery, and graphic elements that all work together. That is what makes a brand recognisable even when the logo is not visible. Before designing a logo, it helps to be clear on your brand strategy, and afterwards, to document how it should be used in brand guidelines.

What to look for in a logo design company

When you hire a logo design company, look for a team that asks about your business, customers, and competitors before showing any designs. Ask to see how their logos work in real use, not just on mockups. Make sure you will receive every file format you need, including vector files for print, and that you will own the logo outright once you have paid.

Be careful with very cheap, very fast logo packages. They often rely on templates and stock icons, which can make your brand look generic and may not be safe to trademark. If you are looking in Delhi, our guide on choosing a branding agency in Delhi has more questions worth asking.
