Do you even need a website?
Many small businesses in India run perfectly well on WhatsApp, Instagram, and word of mouth. So it is fair to ask whether a website is worth it. In most cases, the answer is yes, and not because it is fashionable.
A website is the one place online that you fully own. Instagram can change its algorithm, a marketplace can change its fees, and a WhatsApp number can be lost. Your website stays yours. It is also how Google and AI assistants understand your business, which matters when someone searches for "dentist near me", "best café in Hauz Khas", or "packaging supplier in Noida". Without a website, you are relying on other platforms to represent you.
The good news is that a small business website does not need to be complicated. It needs to do a few things very well.
What your website actually needs to do
Explain what you do in seconds. A visitor should understand what you offer, who it is for, and where you operate within a few seconds of landing on your homepage.
Prove you are real. Real photos of your team, shop, or work, customer reviews, your address, and how long you have been in business build trust quickly.
Make it easy to get in touch. A tap-to-call button, a WhatsApp button, a simple enquiry form, or online booking should be visible on every page, especially on phones.
Work beautifully on a phone. Most of your visitors will be on mobile, often on average connections. Your site must load fast and be easy to use with one thumb.
Show up on Google. Clear page titles, descriptions, your location, and a connected Google Business Profile help local customers find you.
The pages most small businesses need
For most small businesses, five or six pages are enough to start: a homepage, a services or products page, an about page with your story and team, a page of work, results, or reviews, a contact page with a map, and a short FAQ answering the questions customers ask you most often. We go deeper in the pages every business website needs.
If customers book appointments, add online booking. If you sell products, a simple store or a catalogue with WhatsApp ordering may be enough to begin with.
What you can skip at the start
You probably do not need a blog on day one, a complicated custom portal, animations everywhere, or ten pages that say the same thing. Start with what helps customers choose you, and add more when there is a clear reason. A clear, fast, five-page website will usually outperform a slow, cluttered twenty-page one.
DIY builder or a professional website?
Website builders can work for a very simple site if you have the time and an eye for design. But many small businesses end up with slow, generic sites that never rank or convert, because writing good copy, structuring pages, and setting up the technical basics for Google take more expertise than they look.
A professional website makes sense when your business depends on enquiries, when you are competing with others who look polished online, or when you simply do not have time to build and maintain it yourself. Whatever you choose, make sure your domain and accounts are registered in your own name. If you are comparing costs, our guide on how much a business website costs breaks down what drives the price.
Questions to ask before you hire someone
Ask whether they will write the copy or expect you to, how fast the site will load on a phone, whether you can update it yourself, who will own the domain and hosting, and what support you get after launch. Look at sites they have built for businesses like yours and open them on your own phone. Our guide on choosing a website development company lists more.
After launch: keep it alive
A website is not a one-time job. Keep your hours, prices, photos, and services up to date. Ask happy customers for reviews. Add new work or results every few months. Check that the contact form still works. Small, regular updates keep your site trustworthy and help it stay visible on Google.
