Your store is your business
For D2C brands and retailers, the online store is not a marketing extra. It is where customers discover products, decide whether to trust you, pay, and come back. Small problems such as slow product pages, a confusing checkout, or missing payment options directly cost you sales.
Delhi NCR has many e-commerce website development companies, and most will promise beautiful, mobile-friendly stores. The difference shows up after launch: in conversion rates, page speed, how easily your team can manage products and orders, and how well the store grows with you.
Shopify or custom?
Shopify is a strong choice for most brands starting out or selling a straightforward product range. It is reliable, secure, handles payments and checkout well, and your team can manage products without developers. The trade-offs are monthly app costs, transaction fees in some setups, and less flexibility for unusual requirements. Our guide to Shopify website cost in India breaks down what you actually pay for.
A custom store makes sense when you have complex requirements: B2B pricing, custom configurators, unusual checkout flows, deep integration with inventory or ERP systems, or high volumes where app fees add up. It costs more to build but gives complete control.
A good development company will recommend what fits your products and plans, not whatever they happen to specialise in.
What a good e-commerce project includes
A good project starts with your customers, products, and margins, not with a theme. It covers the structure of your catalogue and navigation, product pages that answer every question a buyer has, clear photography and copy, a fast, mobile-first design, a smooth checkout with the payment methods Indian customers expect, including UPI, and integrations with shipping, inventory, and order management.
It should also include the technical basics for search, such as clean product URLs, titles, descriptions, and structured data, plus analytics so you can see where customers drop off. We cover the essentials in what a great e-commerce website needs.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
Will you recommend Shopify or custom, and why? Listen for reasons tied to your business, not their preferences.
Who writes product pages and copy? Product content sells. Make sure someone owns it.
How fast will product pages load on a phone? Ask to see live stores they have built and test them yourself.
How will orders, inventory, and shipping work? Ask how the store connects to the tools you already use.
Can our team manage products and offers ourselves? You should not need a developer to add a product or run a sale.
Who owns the store, domain, and accounts? Everything should be in your name from day one.
Red flags to watch for
Be careful with very cheap fixed packages built on cluttered themes with dozens of apps. They are often slow and hard to manage. Watch for agencies that cannot explain how the store will connect to your operations, and for anyone who keeps the store or domain in their own name. And be wary of a portfolio full of stores that all look the same.
Branding matters as much as the build
In e-commerce, customers cannot touch your product before buying. Your brand, product photography, packaging, and copy have to build that trust instead. A store built on a weak brand will struggle no matter how good the code is. Many brands benefit from working on branding and the store together.
