Restaurant and Café Website Design: What Guests Look For

Most guests check your website before they visit, usually on their phone, usually in a hurry. What a restaurant or café website needs, the design ideas that actually work, and the mistakes that send hungry people to the place next door.

The website guests check before they come

Before most people try a new restaurant or café, they look it up. They want to see the menu and prices, the vibe, the location, the opening hours, and whether they can book a table. They are usually on a phone, often standing on a street or sitting in a cab, and they decide within seconds.

Many restaurants rely on Instagram and food delivery apps for this. Those matter, but they do not give you control. Your website is the one place that shows your space, your food, and your story exactly the way you want, and it is what Google shows when someone searches your name.

What guests actually look for

The menu. This is the most visited part of almost every restaurant website. Make it a real web page that is easy to read on a phone, not a blurry photo or a slow PDF. Include prices, highlight signature dishes, and keep it up to date.

Location and hours. Your address, a map link, opening hours, and how to reach you should be one tap away on every page.

Booking. If you take reservations, let people book directly from your website. Every extra step loses guests.

The vibe. Real photos of your space, your food, and your people tell guests whether this is a place for a date, a work meeting, or a family dinner.

Ways to order. Links to delivery or takeaway, or direct ordering if you offer it.

Events and specials. Live music, workshops, tasting menus, and seasonal specials give regulars a reason to come back.

Design ideas that work

Lead with your best photography. A strong hero image of your food or space does more than any headline.

Keep it fast. High-quality photos do not have to mean a slow site. Optimised images and a lightweight build keep pages loading quickly on mobile data.

Show personality. A café website can be playful, warm, and full of character. Your tone of voice, colours, and illustrations should feel like walking through your door.

Make the important things sticky. On phones, keep "Book a table", "Menu", and "Directions" always within reach.

Tell your story. Who started the place, where the ingredients come from, and what you believe about food all help guests connect with you.

Mistakes that send guests elsewhere

PDF menus that are hard to read on phones. Outdated prices or hours. No booking option. Slow pages packed with large videos. Stock photos instead of your real food. And websites that look nothing like the restaurant itself, which creates disappointment rather than excitement.

Don't forget Google

For restaurants, local search is huge. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and consistent with your website, with the same name, address, phone, and hours. Encourage reviews. Make sure your website includes your location, cuisine, and neighbourhood in plain words, so Google understands where you are and what you serve.

Websites for hospitality at Outlier Labs

At Outlier Labs, we design branding, websites, menus, and social media for restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and hotels. To show what is possible, we designed, wrote, and built Kaafi, a demo website for an imaginary specialty coffee café in Delhi, with a full menu, events, workshops, a journal, and table reservations, all with a voice people remember.

If your restaurant or café deserves a website as good as your food, tell us about it.
