Why LinkedIn matters for founders

For founders and senior leaders, LinkedIn is where reputations are built quietly. Investors look you up before meetings. Senior candidates read your posts before accepting offers. B2B buyers check who runs the company before they sign. Journalists and event organisers find speakers there.

A strong LinkedIn presence does not mean becoming an influencer. It means being known clearly for the right things by the right people. Here is a practical strategy to get there.

Step 1: Decide what you want to be known for

Start with positioning. Pick two or three topics where you have real expertise and genuine opinions, and that connect to your company's goals. A fintech founder might focus on financial inclusion, building trust in fintech, and lessons from scaling a team. A manufacturer might focus on exports, quality, and the future of Indian manufacturing.

Then define who you are writing for: investors, customers, hires, or peers. Your topics and tone will change depending on the answer. Our guide to personal branding for founders goes deeper into positioning.

Step 2: Fix your profile first

Your profile is your landing page. Before posting more, make sure it works:

  • Photo: a clear, recent, friendly headshot.
  • Banner: something that reinforces what you do or what your company stands for.
  • Headline: not just your title, but what you do and for whom.
  • About section: your story, what you believe, and what you are building, written like a person, not a CV.
  • Featured section: your best posts, articles, talks, or company links.
  • Experience: clear descriptions of your current and past roles.

Step 3: Choose your content pillars

Content pillars are the recurring themes you post about. Three to four is enough. For most founders, a good mix looks like:

  • Expertise: lessons, frameworks, and opinions about your industry.
  • Building the company: decisions, mistakes, hiring, and milestones, shared honestly.
  • Customers and impact: problems you solve and stories from the field, with permission.
  • Personal: what shaped you and what you believe, shared selectively.

Step 4: Use the formats that work

Text posts with a strong opening line and short paragraphs are still the backbone of LinkedIn.

Carousels work well for frameworks, lists, and step-by-step ideas.

Short videos help people feel they know you.

Articles and newsletters suit deeper thinking and build a library of your ideas over time.

Comments on other people's posts are underrated. Thoughtful comments put you in front of new audiences and build relationships.

Step 5: Find a rhythm you can keep

Consistency matters more than frequency. Two or three thoughtful posts a week, every week, will build more than daily posting for a month followed by silence. Batch ideas, keep a running list of thoughts from meetings and calls, and plan a simple monthly calendar. Our guide on what to post on LinkedIn has plenty of ideas.

Examples of posts that work

A founder explaining a hard decision and what they learned. A specific opinion about where their industry is heading, with reasons. A simple framework they use to hire or price. A customer problem and how the team solved it. A milestone shared with gratitude rather than bragging. What these have in common is specificity: real details, real opinions, and real stories.

Step 6: Measure the right things

Likes are a weak signal. Better signs that your personal brand is working: profile views from the right people, connection requests from potential customers, investors, or hires, inbound messages, speaking invitations, and people mentioning your posts in meetings.

When you do not have time

Most founders struggle with time, not ideas. Many work with a writer who interviews them and drafts posts in their voice, which we explain in LinkedIn ghostwriting for founders.
